What does one wear to a locker room celebration?
I'll be at Target Field the next three days, covering the Yankees for MLB.com. And the Yankees' magic number for clinching a playoff berth is 1. So it's a pretty safe assumption that I'm going to be covering a locker room celebration this week.
Now, you might be wondering why a team like the Yankees would be celebrating something as mundane as just getting into the playoffs, which is essentially their birthright as the Yankees. It'd be like the Twins celebrating breakfast. But Aaron Judge made an interesting point in the Yankees Beat newsletter by Bryan Hoch (the guy I'm filling in for this week) and it goes something like this:
"There are a lot of guys in this room that are going to wear this pinstriped jersey one time, and might not ever have an opportunity to make it to a postseason."
I do think that fans (and I count myself as a fan, even though I also have a press pass – I've been a sportswriter for a long time, but I was a fan long before that) tend to forget about the fact that players experience these things as individuals, not as one conglomerate that shows up year after year. Sure, at this point it feels like we've seen hundreds of Yankees locker room celebrations ... but not these Yankees. The uniforms are the same. The caps are the same. The canned beer and cheap champagne is the same. But these are all different human beings wearing the uniforms and showering each other in foamy alcohol. So give them a little grace while you grumble about it this week. That's not Derek Jeter or Jason Giambi or Jorge Posada pouring a can of Bud Light over Aaron Boone's head. Let the boys have their fun.
So, what does one wear to such a celebration? Stay tuned and I'll let you know. That's The Generalist promise.
